Do you suffer from poor sleep posture?
Did you know, according to the Sleep Foundation, you spend 33% of your life sleeping? That’s one third of your life in bed! A healthy and supported neck and spine can contribute to a better night’s sleep. This is essential for good health and overall wellbeing.
What causes poor sleep posture:
There are many factors that can affect your posture during sleep. Depending on how ergonomic your pillows and mattresses are and the way we position our body during sleep can affect our spinal health. When you feel the need to use an unsupportive position or sleeping props, this can mean that there is an underlying reason of why you are finding it difficult to settle into sleep. Not only can this cause obvious pain and discomfort in your back and neck, it can lead to general fatigue, muscle tenderness and other spinal health issues.
The first step to correcting your poor sleep posture is to identify the causes. Take a look at the causes below, do you relate to any of these?
Causes of poor sleep posture:
- Incorrect sleeping positions
- Old mattress
- Inadequate sleep hygiene
- Unsupportive pillows
- Bad posture
How to get better sleep?
Sometimes sleep issues come from your body lacking optimal nervous system health, which can result in poor postural alignment, restlessness or discomfort during sleeping. Although postural exercises can help, it does not address the underlying reason as to why your body has adapted to a sub-optimal alignment. This is something to consult with your chiropractor about who can perform a thorough history and examination to get to the core of why you are not sleeping the best.
The way you sleep should be helping, not hindering your spinal health. It is crucial that we are providing comfort and supporting our neck and spine. An old mattress can contribute to existing back/neck pain, so updating to a firm, supportive mattress can assist you in getting a good night’s sleep. Alongside this, an ergonomic pillow can ensure you sleep well and support your neck. If you have lower back pain, try a pillow underneath your knees. At Fremantle Chiropractic, we also stock a range of pillows suitable for our kids to adults which have been designed in a way to help facilitate good sleep alongside your chiropractic care plan.
At Fremantle Chiropractic, our chiropractors can individually assess why your sleep may be hindering you! Consider making a booking so we can assist you in your journey to make changes and reduce the risk of spinal health issues!
